Summer school "Adaptive methods and a posteriori error estimation", Hasselt University

At Hasselt University (June 24-27, 2024) we are organisig a summer school on adaptive methods and a posteriori error estimation for the numerical approximation of the solutions to partial differential equations. Such techniques are essential to guarantee that, on one hand, the numerical approximation is accurate enough, and, on the other hand, the numerical method is efficient, limiting the computations to the minimum necessary.

Dear colleague,

At Hasselt University (June 24-27, 2024) we are organisig a summer school on adaptive methods and a posteriori error estimation for the numerical approximation of the solutions to partial differential equations. Such techniques are essential to guarantee that, on one hand, the numerical approximation is accurate enough, and, on the other hand, the numerical method is efficient, limiting the computations to the minimum necessary.

Scope:  In the summer school, young researchers will learn the theoretical and programming aspects of a posteriori analysis,  and apply these tools to design adaptive solvers for different types of models.  More precisely, the summer school will cover
- Linear elliptic and time-dependent problems
- Nonlinear elliptic problems and iterative schemes
- Different discretization methods such as finite element and mixed finite elements
- Advanced numerical methods such as domain decomposition

All sessions will be hands-on, meaning that sufficient time for exercises, writing codes (using prepared templates in FreeFem++), and their discussion is planned. This will provide the participants with the necessary knowledge to apply these novel techniques to their own research projects.

Speakers: Confirmed speakers are Martin Vohralik (INRIA/Paris), Koondi Mitra (Eindhoven University of Technology) and Elyes Ahmed (SINTEF Oslo).

Prerequisites: The summer school is open to participants having knowledge in partial differential equations, numerical methods and scientific computing, as they are taught to engineers and scientists.

Registration: Registration is free of charge but mandatory (until May 25, 2024). For any question, do not hesitate to contact Sorin Pop (sorin.pop@uhasselt.be)

We hope to see you in Hasselt for the event!

Best regards,
Sorin
